Habitu vs Smile.io: loyalty for e-commerce vs loyalty for restaurants

Smile.io is the default loyalty app for Shopify e-commerce stores. Habitu is the equivalent for restaurant chains, wired into Foodics, Square, and delivery platforms instead of a Shopify cart. Here's when each one fits.

Smile.io is the default loyalty app for Shopify e-commerce stores. Over 100,000 brands run it. It does points, referrals, and VIP tiers, all wired into a Shopify cart and checkout. Habitu is the equivalent for restaurant chains, wired into Foodics, Square, Toast, and delivery aggregators instead of a shopping cart. Same category, different product. Here's why the difference matters when the product is food.

Why Smile.io works for e-commerce

E-commerce loyalty is about converting one-time purchasers into repeat buyers through known identifiers. Shopify already captures email at checkout. Every order is tied to a customer record. Returns, discounts, and rewards can be applied to the cart. The whole mechanism lives inside the Shopify ecosystem, and Smile.io plugs into it cleanly.

Points accrue on every order. Rewards redeem at the next checkout. Referrals share a unique discount code. VIP tiers unlock at spend thresholds. It is, for its category, genuinely excellent software.

Why it doesn't translate to restaurants

Restaurants look nothing like an e-commerce checkout:

Most customers are anonymous at point of sale. A walk-in doesn't enter an email before paying. The identity-capture problem, which Shopify solved, is the entire problem in hospitality.

Transactions live in a POS, not a Shopify order. Smile.io reads Shopify orders. A restaurant loyalty platform has to read Foodics or Square tickets, attach them to a guest, and sync bidirectionally.

Channels are fragmented. The same guest orders dine-in on Wednesday, Talabat on Friday, and direct app on Sunday. Unifying that identity across dine-in, delivery, and direct is restaurant-specific plumbing that e-commerce loyalty tools don't build.

Discounts and offers run differently. A restaurant can't "add to cart" a 20% off discount. It has to be applied at the POS, at a branch, by staff who weren't trained on your loyalty tool.

Segmentation needs are different. Restaurants care about visit frequency, daypart preference, and branch affinity. E-commerce cares about cart value and catalogue category. RFM behaves differently in each.

What Habitu is built around

Anonymous-to-known conversion. QR enrolment at the table, receipt-driven sign-up, phone-at-checkout, restaurant-native capture moments that Shopify-shaped tools don't handle.

POS + delivery integration. Reads Foodics, Square, and Toast transactions directly. Also ingests Talabat, Deliveroo, and Careem order data where available.

Branded restaurant apps. Your logo, your menu, your ordering. Native iOS + Android.

RFM tuned for F&B. Segments calibrated on visit frequency and daypart behaviour, not catalogue clicks.

Campaign patterns from restaurant operators. Iftar reservations, second-visit nudges, dormant win-back framed around menu launches, not Shopify flash sales.

Could you run Smile.io on a restaurant?

Technically, if you had a Shopify-based direct-ordering storefront, yes. Practically, no, you'd be capturing loyalty on only the direct-Shopify slice of your traffic (usually under 10% of orders), missing dine-in entirely, and missing delivery. You'd also be running a Shopify theme for a restaurant, which most operators aren't. The match is wrong.

Who should pick which

Pick Smile.io if: you're an e-commerce brand on Shopify. Fundamentally, that's who it's built for.

Pick Habitu if: you're a restaurant brand with one or more physical locations, transactions running through a POS, and ambition to capture identity across dine-in, delivery, and direct channels.

The distinction matters because "loyalty" isn't one category. Loyalty for e-commerce and loyalty for restaurants share a word and little else. Habitu Branded Apps are built for the F&B-specific problem of unifying guest identity across every channel a restaurant actually uses.
