SmartSegments explained: 6 customer types every restaurant should know

Habitu's behavioral segmentation engine groups your customers into six segments based on recency, frequency, and monetary value. Here's how it works.

Most loyalty programs treat all customers identically. Everyone earns the same points, gets the same rewards, receives the same emails. But your customers aren't all the same, and treating them as if they are is leaving money on the table.

SmartSegments is Habitu's behavioral segmentation engine. It automatically groups your customers into six segments based on three dimensions: how recently they visited (recency), how often they come (frequency), and how much they spend (monetary value).

The six segments

Champions are your best customers by every measure. High frequency, high spend, recent visits. They typically represent 5-10% of your base but drive 30-40% of revenue. Strategy: recognize them. Make them feel valued. They're your advocates.

Loyal Regulars are consistent visitors who haven't reached champion frequency or spend. They come reliably but there's room to grow. Strategy: a small reward for increased frequency goes a long way.

Promising customers are showing early signs of becoming regulars. They've visited 2-3 times recently with increasing frequency. Strategy: this is the critical conversion window. Make the next visit happen.

New customers have visited once or twice. The majority will never return without intervention. Strategy: a welcome series within 48 hours of their first visit.

At Risk customers were regulars whose visit frequency has noticeably dropped. Strategy: act now. A targeted offer in this window has the highest recovery rate of any segment.

Dormant customers haven't visited in 30-60+ days despite previous regular patterns. Some can be recovered with a significant incentive. Most are gone. The lesson is earlier intervention when they first become "at risk."

Why segments beat points

Points accumulate linearly. Segments change dynamically. A customer who was "loyal" last month is "at risk" this month if their visits drop. That real-time behavioral signal is worth more than any static points balance.
