Loyalty is identity capture, not rewards
Most operators confuse the rewards program with the loyalty program. The rewards program is the promise you make to customers, buy nine, get one. The loyalty program is everything that happens because you now know who that customer is: their order history, their visit cadence, their channel preference, their response to a push notification sent at 11:42am on a Tuesday.
Stamps and points are the transaction cost you pay to get the customer to identify themselves. Once they do, the real work begins.
The only two numbers that matter
Visit frequency and average order value. Everything a loyalty program does, mechanics, messages, app features, POS integrations, should map to moving one of those two numbers. If a feature doesn't, it's decoration.
This is why we rebuilt the Habitu dashboard around Pulse: one score, composed of frequency and spend deltas, updated nightly.
What loyalty is not
It is not a discount engine. It is not a CRM. It is not an email list. Discounts erode margin without changing behavior. A CRM stores contacts but doesn't trigger anything. An email list misses everyone under 35.
Loyalty, done right, is a feedback loop: identity → behavior data → targeted nudge → changed behavior → more data.
